Angel Hughes, one of the Proudly She Served Portrait Participants recently had the honor of being selected as the NY Mets Veteran of the Game! Her sister, Darlyne, and cousin Lenny got to attend with her.

Read from Angel about the experience and be sure to watch the cool video the Mets made!

What was the experience like?

My experience as the Mets Vet of the game was completely surreal! I’ve attended several baseball games and other professional sports events, but this was my first time watching the Mets play. I was excited to attend my first Mets game and I didn’t quite know what to expect as an honoree. I was a little anxious.

The entire Mets staff was very warm and welcoming as I arrived to the stadium. I was shown how to navigate to my seat and was given a little brief on what to expect and when to be ready. My anxiousness subsided because it seemed all I had to do was be present after the 4th inning, hold a flag, smile and wave. I practiced my ‘routine’ with my sister several times. I didn’t want to look like a lifeless robot.

What emotions did you have?

My emotions for the day were mainly excitement and happiness! I felt honored to even have been considered for this opportunity. I felt proud to serve my country.

What was the best part of the day?

The best part of the day was when I received a standing ovation from the Mets crowd! At that moment, I was overwhelmed with joy and pride. This entire experience will easily go down as one of the coolest things I’ve ever done in my life. I will forever cherish this experience.
